Located in the heart of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape wine region in the Rhône Valley, Domaine des Sénéchaux is one of the oldest wineries in the region, having been founded in the 14th century. The estate covers approximately 27 hectares of vineyards, some of which are around 90 years old, and only three hectares are dedicated to growing white grapes. The estate was purchased by the Cazes family in 2006. This elegant Chateauneuf du Pape is a blend of Grenache Noir, Syrah, and Mourvèdre, with a small addition of Cinsault-Vaccarèse. The grapes are sourced from the estate's vineyards, which benefit from south-southwest exposure and soils composed of quartzite pebbles. After vinification at a controlled temperature, the wine ages for approximately one year in a mix of large oak barrels and concrete vats. The resulting wine is powerful and concentrated with an expressive and intense aromatic profile that releases notes of raspberry, cherry, and small red berries, followed by spicy and toasted notes. On the palate, it is soft and juicy, fresh, and well-structured, with a full body and a good concentration of fruit. The tannins are fine and well-integrated, and the finish is long and complex, with hints of spices and oak. Try it with braised oxtail or grilled lamb chops.
