Pombal do Vesúvio is an elegant expression of Douro red wine from the historic Quinta do Vesúvio estate. The 137-hectare vineyard, predominantly north and west-facing and planted on schistous soils with small granite outcrops, rises from 110 metres at the river to 450 metres. The terraced vineyards surrounding the estate’s ancient dovecote (‘pombal’ in Portuguese) are planted primarily with Touriga Nacional, producing a wine of harmony, depth, and distinctive regional character. Additional contributions come from Touriga Franca and a small portion of Tinta Amarela, creating a complex and balanced Douro red. Meet the producer Quinta do Vesúvio, established in 1827, is one of the Douro Valley’s most prestigious estates, renowned for producing wines of exceptional balance and longevity. With a historic house, chapel, and winery, the estate has long been considered a cornerstone of the region’s winemaking heritage. Production Grapes are hand-picked into small containers and undergo meticulous sorting at the winery. After gentle de-stemming, individual berries are sorted and gravity-fed into small fermenting tanks. Fermentation is closely monitored to extract maximum aromatic and flavour potential. The wine is matured for nine months in French oak barrels (400L and 225L) before bottling in April 2023. Tasting notes Deep ruby-red in colour, Pombal do Vesúvio 2022 reveals expressive aromas of ripe black fruits, violets, and subtle spice. The palate is well-balanced and vibrant, with fine tannins, harmonious acidity, and a long, persistent finish, offering both immediate pleasure and excellent ageing potential.
