Blandy’s is the only family of the original founders of the Madeira wine trade to still own and manage their own company. With a history dating back to 1811, the family has been instrumental in the development of Madeira wine and continues to live on the island, maintaining seven generations of winemaking tradition. Blandy’s remains dedicated to the craftsmanship and heritage of Madeira wine. Vineyards Grapes are sourced from quality vineyards at approximately 200 m above sea level, located on the north of the island near São Vicente and on the south in Câmara de Lobos. Vinification Blandy’s Duke of Clarence undergoes fermentation on the skins with natural yeast at 24–26°C in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. After around 48 hours, fermentation is arrested with the addition of grape brandy to achieve the desired sweetness. Maturation The wine is transferred to ‘estufa’ tanks, undergoing a cyclic heating and cooling process between 45–50°C over three months. Following ‘estufagem’, it is aged for three years in American oak casks, then racked and fined before blending and bottling. Tasting Note Deep golden-brown in colour, with aromas of honey and raisins. Rich, full-bodied, and soft-textured, making it an ideal after-dinner drink. Food Matching & Serving Blandy’s Duke of Clarence is ready to drink and does not require decanting. Perfect with desserts such as fruit, cakes, chocolate puddings, and soft cheeses. Will keep for several months after opening.
