Drink it now or cellar for up to 15 years. It is recommended to decant it for half an hour. Calera is a Californian winery located on the Central Coast and founded in 1975 by Josh Jensen, a winemaker considered a pioneer of Pinot Noir in America. Today, the vineyards planted by Jensen, on the limestone-rich soils of Mount Harlan, are widely recognized as some of the most prestigious growing sites in the entire New World for producing unique wines with enormous aging potential. The De Villiers vineyard, located among the Mount Harlan vineyards at an altitude of approximately 2,200 feet, was planted in 1996. Here the vines enjoy an eastern exposure, low-productive soils, and an ideal, sunny position but fresh and ventilated by ocean breezes. After vinification, the finished wine rests for 17 months in used French oak barrels. The wine shows a deep color with ruby red tones and an intense and ripe aromatic profile with notes of plum and cassis, raspberry, and other wild fruits, integrated with hints of tea and spicy notes. On the palate, it is concentrated, complex, and juicy. It has a medium body, a perfectly balanced acidity, and fine, silky tannins. The finish is long and slightly mineral. A must-try with duck or goose.
