Capannelle’s Tuscan Chardonnay opens with bold scents of citrus, pear and almond, underpinned by subtle hints of slate, lavender and freshly toasted bread. This is an excellent wine for pairing with food and is crafted from 100% Chardonnay, plucked from the hills around the village of Gaiole, in the province of Siena. Capannelle’s story began in 1974, when businessman Raffaele Rossetti acquired a 16th-century villa in the heart of Chianti. In just a few years, the winery became a benchmark for quality wine in Tuscany; and it has steadily grown ever since, now encompassing over 35 hectares of vineyards. This is Capannelle’s flagship Chardonnay, a continuation of the first white wine created by the winery in 1988. On the palate, it is a perfect balance of fruit flavours and texture, crispness and cream. The grapes were matured for 10 months before release, in a combination of stainless steel vats and new oak barrels. It has a dry, sapid character, bursting with notes of pear, citrus rind, green apple skin and honey. The finish is lengthy, with slightly sweet tones that counteract the crisp acidity. Pair this wine with salmon, trout or a hearty vegetable pie.
