Drink it now or cellar for up to 10 years. No need to decant, but best to open it half an hour before service. Founded in 1996 by Kim Crawford and his wife, Erica, Kim Crawford Wines is one of New Zealand's most prestigious wineries, located in Marlborough. The company was sold to the Constellation group in 2005. The team of viticulturists and winemakers is now led by Anthony Walkenhorst, a student of Kim Crawford, and the grapes are sourced from a number of local growers with the aim of maintaining the founder's style and philosophy and a consistently high quality. Pinot Noir grapes are selected and harvested from a series of vineyards spread across the cool-climate wine regions of Marlborough and Central Otago, characterized by a blend of diverse microclimates and soils, and using different clones. After harvest, a brief cold maceration, and fermentation, the wine ages in oak for 8 months. The result is a complex and expressive wine, revealing a brilliant dark ruby color and a broad, fragrant aromatic profile with notes of strawberry, black cherry, and red berries, followed by spicy notes. On the palate, it is soft and generous with a good savory edge, velvety tannins, and lively acidity. The finish is long and delicately spicy. It pairs well with tagliatelle with mushrooms or herb-roasted lamb.
