Blandy’s Duke of Cumberland is a premium Madeira wine from the world-renowned Blandy family, the only descendants of the original founders of the Madeira wine trade still managing their historic winery. With over 200 years of experience and seven generations of expertise, Blandy’s continues to craft Madeira wines that reflect the island’s unique terroir and centuries-old traditions. This medium-rich Madeira is perfect for wine lovers seeking a classic, elegant dessert wine from Madeira. Vineyards The grapes for Blandy’s Duke of Cumberland are sourced from carefully selected vineyards in northern Madeira, near São Vicente, at altitudes ranging from 200 m to 400 m above sea level. The volcanic soils and Atlantic climate create ideal conditions for producing grapes with crisp acidity and intense flavour. Vinification Fermentation takes place on the skins with natural yeast in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks at 24–26 °C. After approximately three days, the wine is fortified with grape brandy to stop fermentation at the desired level of sweetness, preserving the wine’s natural balance and freshness. Maturation The wine is matured in traditional ‘estufa’ tanks, undergoing a cyclic heating and cooling process between 45–50 °C for three months. Following this, it is aged for three years in American oak casks, racked, fined, blended, and bottled, ensuring a smooth, rounded texture and layered complexity. Tasting Notes Blandy’s Duke of Cumberland is a deep, golden-hued Madeira with vibrant tangy notes and crisp fruit. It is medium-rich, beautifully balanced, and offers a refined, elegant character that pairs perfectly with desserts or cheeses. Serving & Cellarage This Madeira does not require decanting. Serve slightly chilled with desserts such as fruit tarts, milk chocolate or custard puddings, and soft cheeses. Bottled ready to enjoy, it will keep for several months after opening, making it an ideal wine for special occasions or everyday indulgence.
