Jumilla is a tough place to be a vine, yet the old bush vines high in the hot, dusty hills of the region produce characterful and fruit-packed wines from the local Monastrell grape. The Silver Label represents Monastrell in a more serious, dark-fruited, and powerful expression. Meet the Producer: The Gil family have been producing wine in Jumilla since the early 20th century but took a major step forward when Miguel Gil, great-grandson of the company's founder, built a new bodega in time for the 2003 vintage. Situated on the slopes of Peñarrubia mountain—the highest part of Jumilla with poor, stony soils noted for richly flavoured, concentrated Monastrell—the bodega owns over 750 hectares of vineyards (mainly unirrigated bush vines of very low yield from indigenous clones), with access to further fruit from 30–70 year old vines. Bodegas Juan Gil focuses on powerful yet approachable modern wines, primarily Monastrell (85% of vineyards), with smaller plantings of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot, and Petit Verdot. Production: The Monastrell grapes are selected from parcels of old vine fruit (over 40 years old), grown in shallow, chalky soils on a bed of limestone and rock. After harvesting, the grapes undergo a 25-day maceration, then are pressed and aged for 12 months in French oak barrels. Tasting Notes: Powerful aromas of baked strawberry, blackberry, and a hint of chocolate. Spice and cedar are layered with juicy ripe plum. Full-bodied with supple tannins and bright acidity, leaving a palate that is fresh yet concentrated, with impressive length and complexity. Food Match: Paella or risotto, or a meat feast pizza.
