Tikveš 'Babuna' Red is a bold and expressive Macedonian wine, showcasing rich blackberry, cherry, and plum flavours layered with violet and a hint of iodine. Full-bodied yet elegant, it delivers a succulent, long finish with balanced acidity and fine-grained tannins, making it a striking representation of Tikveš terroir. Meet the producer Established in 1885, Tikveš Winery is one of North Macedonia’s oldest and most respected estates. Located in a region blessed with abundant sunshine, mountains, lakes, and rivers, the estate cultivates indigenous varieties such as Plavec, Vranec, and Kratoshija alongside international varietals. Sustainable vineyard practices and state-of-the-art winemaking technology allow Tikveš to produce authentic, characterful wines that reflect the country’s unique viticultural heritage. Vineyard The grapes for Babuna Red come from a 12-hectare vineyard in Bela Voda, Tikveš. The vines are approximately 35 years old, double Guyot trained, and planted at a density of 2,700 vines per hectare. Clay soils, 450–500 mm of annual rainfall, and 190 sunny days per year contribute to concentrated, aromatic fruit. Harvest takes place between late September and early October. Winemaking Grapes are cold macerated for two days at 6–7°C, followed by fermentation and extended skin contact for 21 days in 80-hectolitre concrete vats at 23–25°C. The wine then matures for 12 months, building structure, depth, and complexity while preserving the character of the indigenous grapes. Tasting notes A bold and full-bodied red with aromas of blackberry, cherry, and baked plum accented by violet. The palate offers vibrant fruit flavours of pomegranate, sour cherry, and raspberry, with firm yet elegant tannins and a succulent, lingering finish.
