Admiral Rodney HMS Formidable Gold Rum comes from St. Lucia Distillers, a producer known for its characterful pot‑still rums and long tropical ageing. The Admiral Rodney series pays tribute to the British naval commander who helped secure Caribbean trade routes in the late 18th century, with each bottling named after a ship in his fleet. HMS Formidable was Rodney’s flagship during the Battle of the Saints in 1782, and the rum reflects that sense of prestige through a richer, more mature blend. The components are typically aged between 9 and 12 years in ex‑bourbon barrels, giving it greater depth and structure than the younger expressions in the range. Its aroma shows warm caramel, rich oak, vanilla, dried fruit and a touch of baking spice. On the palate, it offers a smooth, layered texture with notes of toffee, raisins, gentle spice, toasted oak and a subtle roasted character from extended ageing. The finish is long, warm and elegantly spiced, making it a refined sipping rum that showcases the craftsmanship and complexity of St. Lucian distillation.
Rumtown CACD 2004 17 Year Old Venezuelan Rum 50cl
A single cask production yielding only 264 bottles. Matured in American oak casks from 2004 to 2012 then shipped to the Dominican Republic in same cask and aged for a further 3 years. In 2016, shipped to the UK and refilled into the recycled rum oak casks in June 2017. The enticing, rich nut-brown colour almost hides the fact that this is a golden rum. Quickly however the golden rum characteristics shine through with delightful toffee notes on the pronounced nose that excites the senses for what is to follow on the palate. There is no disappointment, the mouth is coated with refined and soft flavours of treacle, vanilla and spiced all rounded off with subtle dark chocolate notes.
