Benromach Contrasts Peat Smoke

Benromach Contrasts Peat Smoke is a bold Speyside single malt whisky crafted in small batches using heavily peated Scottish barley and matured exclusively in first-fill bourbon casks. This expression forms part of Benromach’s Contrasts series, which explores flavour profiles that diverge from the distillery’s traditional lightly peated style. Distilled in 2014 and bottled in 2024, this 9-year-old whisky is bottled at 46% ABV, with natural colour and no chill filtration, preserving its full character and texture. On the nose, it opens with sweet vanilla and lemon sherbet, layered with apricot and gentle wood smoke. The palate delivers a rich burst of orchard fruits, including poached apple and pear, complemented by cinder toffee and subtle spice. A hint of menthol and anise adds complexity, while the peat smoke remains present but balanced, enhancing rather than overpowering the fruity sweetness. The finish is medium-long, with lingering notes of caramel, green bell pepper and soft smoke that fade into a vegetal freshness.
