Bodega El Reventón, Cru Artesano 2023
Together with Catena Zapata’s renowned winemaker Alejandro Vigil—her partner at El Enemigo—and Honest Grapes club member Gearóid Lane, Adrianna purchased the revered El Reventón vineyard from cult producer Comando G. The team has since expanded with La Reina, a 7-hectare estate in San Juan de la Nava, and an historic vineyard on the San Gregorio slopes once owned by the Landi family. Perched nearly 900 metres up in the Sierra de Gredos mountains overlooking Madrid, these sites offer ideal conditions for Garnacha (Grenache). The altitude, rocky soils and cool nights producing wines of remarkable finesse, more reminiscent of Chambolle-Musigny than Châteauneuf-du-Pape. From old bush vines rooted in granitic soils, the focus is firmly on freshness, aromatic complexity and texture rather than density or sweetness, though the 2023s still carry impressive depth and intensity. These debut releases of their flagship wines have been eagerly anticipated since our tasting with Adrianna at 67 Pall Mall last year. The La Reina Cru Artesano stands out as outstanding value at just £50 a bottle.
Pommard, Domaine Benoit Girardin 2023
"From two parcels—Les Lambots near Volnay and En Mareau—this Pommard strikes a balance between elegance and power. The nose offers vibrant red fruit, with cherries, red currants, and a hint of warm spice. The palate is silky yet grippy, with fine tannins providing structure and excellent balance." Our note Son of Yves and nephew of Vincent, Benoit Girardin has steadily carved out his own reputation and is already turning heads in the Parisian restaurant scene. 2023 was a standout vintage for Girardin, delivering both quantity and quality. While white yields were typical, the reds saw an unprecedented abundance. The whites were harvested first, beginning on September 7th, with the reds following on September 10th. Whites show a harmonious balance between sugar and acidity, with greater maturity and slightly softer acidity compared to 2022. The reds are all 100% destemmed with no fining or filtration, while the whites retain purity and definition with meticulous filtration.
