Bodegas Señorío de Arana, Viña Del Oja Rioja Reserva 2018
The 2018 Rioja Reserva from Viña del Oja displays a garnet-red hue with developing brick edges. Aromatically, it introduces a layered bouquet of dried cherry, red plum, leather, cedar, and subtle tobacco. On the palate, it's medium-full bodied with a smooth, refined texture, ripe red and dark fruit flavours harmonise with gentle spice and earthy elements. Silky tannins and vibrant acidity culminate in a lingering, savoury finish marked by hints of vanilla and tobacco. Crafted under the thoughtful stewardship of this Rioja Alavesa estate, the wine begins with a long aging period: roughly 18 months in American oak followed by extended bottle maturation. It's drinking beautifully now with grilled or roasted meats, mature cheese, or hearty stews.
Silent Noise MF Grenache 2024
This wine draws inspiration from the light, semi-carbonic reds of Beaujolais, designed to be immediately drinkable and immensely approachable. The fruit comes from the Killick Vineyard, a 40-year-old, one-acre bush vine site in McLaren Flat. Planted on a sand hill with 20 metres of wind-blown coastal sands overlaying alluvial soils, the vineyard produces grapes with remarkable purity and texture. Hand-harvested by a close-knit group including members of the Killick family—baby Jack sometimes in the tractor cab—the grapes are treated with great care from vine to winery. Winemaking Ten percent of a 5-tonne stainless steel fermenter is filled with whole bunches, topped with lightly crushed and destemmed berries. Fermentation is initiated with EC118 Champagne yeast and pumped over four times daily for a month. After fermentation, the wine is bag-pressed and aged for three months in 300-litre French oak barrels, seven years old. The wine is bottled unfiltered and unfined, preserving its natural texture and vibrancy. Tasting Notes Aromatic citrus notes lead the nose, entwined with macerated strawberries and hints of allspice. Turkish dried apricots and red sherbet lift the perfume, creating an engaging, playful bouquet. The palate is texturally expressive, filled with ripe strawberries and raspberries, with gentle spice and a touch of Kirsch that rounds out the mid-palate. The result is a vivid, lively wine with freshness, charm, and layers of delicate complexity. Food Pairing Perfect alongside charcuterie, light roasted meats, or simply enjoyed on its own. Serving Temperature Slightly chilled or at cellar temperature to fully appreciate its aromatic intensity.
