Bourgogne Blanc, Domaine de Montille 2022
“From vines in Puligny Montrachet, right in front of the chateau (de Puligny Montrachet), whose holdings were incorporated into the domaine’s portfolio in 2012. This is brought up in a combination of one- to three-year-old barrels. Breezy, lime-inflected nose, with pear skin and capsicum, heather honey and meadow blossoms. Bright, fresh, lightly lactic attack with firm fresh apple fruit, green and gold, and cinnamon, developing a good mid-palate intensity with impressive length and poise at this level.” Tom Harrow, Head Wine Guru Domaine de Montille is one of Burgundy’s most revered estates and this burgeoning family property is very much at the top of its game, producing wines of exceptional quality: scintillating, proper Burgundies, unusually across both reds and whites. Features as one of the Top 10 Côte de Beaune Red Wine Producers and Top 10 Côte de Beaune White Wine Producers in Tim Atkin's Burgundy 2022 Special Report. Self-confessed ‘acid freak’ Brian Sieve was especially careful with battonage and lees-stirring of the Chardonnays in 2022, to maintain freshness and verve, noting that it was not a high acid vintage. A little less new oak (not that there is ever more than just enough) and whole bunches in the reds than in the previous solar vintages, plus the gentler acid profile means the wines have a charm and immediacy to rival any vintage we’ve tasted from the domaine.
Pouilly-Fuissé Premier Cru 'Les Bouthières', Meurgey-Croses 2023
"From a cooler site with clay-limestone soils, this wine has exotic pineapple fruit, good minerality, and bright acidity. Fermented with no new oak, it is fresh and elegant." Our note Pierre Meurgey is a rising star in Burgundy, blending tradition with modern techniques to craft precise and terroir-driven wines. His focus is on showcasing the nuanced characteristics of each appellation, from the Mâconnais to the Côte de Beaune. The 2023 vintage was particularly noteworthy, beginning with uncertainty due to a sudden heatwave in early September. Thanks to early harvesting, Pierre achieved balanced ripeness and avoided overripeness, producing wines with finesse, vibrant fruit, and excellent ageing potential. Both reds and whites are approachable young yet structured.
