BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO Riserva Fuligni 2016
Revisiting the stunning 2016 Riserva is a treat. Showing structure, vibrancy and elegance, it opens with enticing aromas of rose, Mediterranean herb and balsamic scents of eucalyptus. All about finesse, the elegant, full-bodied and focused palate features crushed raspberry, red cherry, licorice and tobacco accompanied by taut, refined tannins. It’s well balanced and vibrant, with bright acidity while a saline mineral note lends depth to the close. Still incredibly youthful at eight, this has years to go. What a gorgeous wine. Drink 2026–2046. Abv: 14.5%
CHARMES CHAMBERTIN Grand Cru Domaine J. Confuron Cotetidot 2017
(from a .30 ha parcel in Charmes proper). Reduction and wood aromas reveal little else. There is terrific punch to the beautifully well-detailed middle weight plus flavors that exude a lovely sense of underlying tension on the solidly persistent finish. This isn’t as dense as the Clos de Vougeot but it is a bit finer but even so, plenty of patience will still be necessary.
