CARO Bodegas Caro 2021
Intense ruby red colour, offering restrained and savoury flavours with balanced spice, liqourice, graphite and blackberry. This is a consistently good quality Malbec with a shot of Cabernet adding structure and tannins, and is full of pleasure in this slightly cooler-than-usual Argentinian vintage. First time sold through the wider negociant system of The Place, rather than as an exclusivity. Oliver Tregoat winemaker, director Philipe Rolet.
MOREY SAINT DENIS 'Petites Noix' 1er Cru Domaine Stéphane Magnien 2019
This is a blend of two little vineyards, Gruenchers and Clos Baulet. This is the one cuvée where Stéphane allows a small proportion of whole bunch, (10%) to counter the clay soil. It is amazing though to see such a clear effect from the inclusion of so small a percentage, really changing the profile, bringing a fresher red fruit, and a very long finish with a tiny bitterness. So different in style to the sturdy Faconnieres! Tasted: November 2020 4/5 stars
