CHABLIS Vieilles Vignes 1er Cru Montmains Domaine Raoul Gautherin 2023
The 2023 Chablis Montmains 1er Cru is something I would serve to those convinced the region no longer produces "old school" Chablis. This has a fresh green apple-, pear- and light grassy meadow-scented bouquet with a steely reserve. It could give you more...but this knows it's better not to. The palate is very well balanced with a silver bead of acidity. This is linear with fine depth and a malic finish. The 2023 is superb.
VOLNAY Domaine Fernand & Laurent Pillot 2021
(one-third of this is from the 1er vineyards of Les Brouillards and Roncerets plus the villages portion of Brouillards and Grands Champs). A cool, pure and airy nose blends together mostly red pinot fruit and discreet earth nuances with those of menthol and discreet wood wisps. There is both better refinement and an appealing texture to the well-defined and lingering finish that turns mildly rustic as the finish sits on the palate.
