CHASSAGNE MONTRACHET 1er Cru Vergers Domaine Fernand & Laurent Pillot 2022
(90% from Les Pasquelles and the rest from Les Vergers proper). Here the wood treatment is less subtle though by no means invasive on the smoky and floral-suffused aromas of mostly white fleshed fruit and citrus rind. The rich and generously proportioned yet quite punchy middle weight flavors also possess a seductive texture thanks to the sappy dry extract that serves to buffer the moderately firm and bright acidity supporting the solidly lengthy finish. This is not as dense as the Fairendes but it’s finer with fine complexity as well. Worth checking out.
VOLNAY 1er Cru Santenots Domaine Rémi Jobard 2021
An overtly floral and spice-suffused nose is comprised by notes of various red berries and exotic tea. I very much like the refined texture of the middleweight flavors even though they are not especially dense while exhibiting focused power and a light minerality on the youthfully austere finish that is firm enough to repay up to a decade of cellaring. This is a more elegant Santenots than usual.
