CHASSAGNE MONTRACHET 1er Cru Vide Bourse Domaine Fernand & Laurent Pillot 2022
(from a parcel that is immediately adjacent to Bâtard). Like the Vergers, the wood treatment is prominent but not invasive as it permits the ripe and again vaguely exotic aromas of white and yellow peach, passion fruit and citrus confit to be appreciated. The wood also appears on the caressing and plush medium weight plus flavors that are also blessed with an abundance of sappy dry extract that coats the palate on the powerful and serious but well-balanced and refreshing finale. While this could be approached young, I would advise holding it for at least a few years first so that the wood treatment can more completely integrate.
VOSNE ROMANÉE 1er Cru Suchots Domaine J. Confuron Cotetidot 2005
The 2005 Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots 1er Cru is a disappointment. Earthy on the nose with stewed black tea, it lacks the fruité and floral tropes one expects from this village, particularly in a benevolent season like this. The palate is framed by slightly obdurate, grainy tannins, which are somewhat hard in the mouth and lack a sense of Pinoté on the finish. I know this grower has its followers who have regaled bottles with age… I remain unconvinced.
