Chassagne-Montrachet 'Les Bondues', Jane Eyre 2018

Jane Eyre's wines, whether from Beaune, Nuits, or Beaujolais, display her distinctive style - charming and inviting, with supple tannins and soft but bright fruits. Gentle extraction and judicious use of new oak means these have been among the more immediately appealing Burgundies in our portfolio. The 2018 vintage has clearly stamped its imprint over Jane’s wines as there is greater power, deeper fruit and gravitas allied to the usual charm and definition. Her decision to include 30% whole bunches (as opposed to none last year) has given the wines extra depth and complexity to balance the ripe fruit. Meanwhile her preference for early bottling, important in a vintage like 2018 to preserve freshness and prevent the fruit drying out, still means the range is pretty accessible, but it is definitely serious. Jane says “ ultimately vintage and vineyard should trump your winemaking ” but in 2018 all three elements have combined to create something rather special. "Jane’s 'Monopole', just across the road from Montrachet, with 80-year old Pinot vines in middle of vineyard (she only made 900 bots). Deep, red and blue fruits on the nose which is concentrated, polished, with earthy, ferrous notes. The old vine character comes through on the palate which is heavy with stones and salinity, alongside bright red fruits finishing long, with generous but refined, chalky tannins." Chassagne-Montrachet Premier Cru 'Morgeot Rouge', Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard 2021

The wines from Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard have a clear purity and minerality as well as a lovely weight and richness of fruit. Céline Fontaine and her husband Fred Robert (formerly of Armand Rousseau) have over the past decade raised their stock exponentially. Céline has introduced using only natural yeast and prefers to age the top cru’s slightly longer in tank, meaning they age more slowly in bottle than we saw previously. This is a well-regarded estate which has moved into its next epoch and with quality only on the rise, there is a lot to love about all of these wines. Morgeot, which lies mid-slope with a south-easterly exposure, is a perfect example of the Chassagne-Montrachet style. Morgeot lies on the border between the Côte d'Or and Saone-et-Loire regions, and it was actually the boundary in the Gallo-Roman period. At this time the plot of land was called Morga (from the Latin "Margo" which means edge or border). The Abbey of Morgeot dates back to year 864, but around 1150 the Cistercian monks benefited from numerous donations and built a communal farm, vineyard and chapel in the vicinity.
