Chassagne-Montrachet Premier Cru 'Clos Saint Jean', Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard 2022

The wines from Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard have a clear purity and minerality as well as a lovely weight and richness of fruit. Céline Fontaine and her husband Fred Robert (formerly of Armand Rousseau) specialise in whites, and over the past decade have raised their stock exponentially. Céline has introduced using only natural yeast and prefers to age the top cru’s slightly longer in tank, meaning they age more slowly in bottle than we saw previously. This is a well-regarded estate which has moved into its next epoch and with quality only on the rise, there is a lot to love about all of these wines. "The 2020 is more serious. 2022 is more charming. The reds are like 2019, for the easy ripeness, but the structure is more like 2020. What impresses me about this vintage is the concentration.” Winemaker's notes (worldoffinewine.com)

Meursault, Jane Eyre 2023

The 2023 vintage at Jane Eyre Wines continues the tradition of producing refined and expressive wines with hallmark precision. Like 2022, 2023 was shaped by a warm growing season, but with the significant difference of ample rainfall when needed, keeping the soils well-nourished. The reds display lovely perfume, aromatics, and depth—qualities Jane prioritises in her Pinot Noirs—while the whites, after a slower start, have blossomed into vibrant, expressive examples of the vintage. "Precise and balanced, this wine opens with evolved apple and citrus fruit. Its initial linear focus broadens into a full, textured mid-palate, finishing with impressive length. A quintessential Meursault with great structure and harmony." Our note Jane’s use of whole-cluster fermentation increased in 2023, coupled with colder soaks at the start of fermentation. This approach has resulted in wines with richer colours and enhanced complexity. While the vintage is already showing expressive youthful charm, it also holds great potential for aging, making 2023 both approachable and collectible. The wines evolve quickly, offering fresh insights with each tasting.
