Chassagne-Montrachet Premier Cru 'Morgeot Rouge', Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard 2021

The wines from Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard have a clear purity and minerality as well as a lovely weight and richness of fruit. Céline Fontaine and her husband Fred Robert (formerly of Armand Rousseau) have over the past decade raised their stock exponentially. Céline has introduced using only natural yeast and prefers to age the top cru’s slightly longer in tank, meaning they age more slowly in bottle than we saw previously. This is a well-regarded estate which has moved into its next epoch and with quality only on the rise, there is a lot to love about all of these wines. Morgeot, which lies mid-slope with a south-easterly exposure, is a perfect example of the Chassagne-Montrachet style. Morgeot lies on the border between the Côte d'Or and Saone-et-Loire regions, and it was actually the boundary in the Gallo-Roman period. At this time the plot of land was called Morga (from the Latin "Margo" which means edge or border). The Abbey of Morgeot dates back to year 864, but around 1150 the Cistercian monks benefited from numerous donations and built a communal farm, vineyard and chapel in the vicinity.

Montes Folly Syrah 2019

Montes Folly Syrah Apalta is a concentrated and elegant expression of Chilean Syrah, sourced from the steepest slopes of Apalta’s Finca Apalta, one of the country’s finest vineyard sites. The granite soils, low yields, and cool breezes create grapes with remarkable intensity, aromatic purity, and structure. This wine displays a deep red colour with purple hues, combining ripe black fruits, spice, and subtle oak integration for a complex and harmonious profile. Meet the producer Montes was founded in 1988 by Aurelio Montes, Douglas Murray, Alfredo Vidaurre, and Pedro Grand with the ambition to craft the finest wines in Chile. Renowned for meticulous vineyard and winemaking practices, Montes has become synonymous with quality and consistency, producing wines that express the character of their unique terroirs. Production Grapes are sourced from a single parcel on Apalta’s highest slopes, planted on 45° gradients with Guyot-trained vines. Low-yielding vines produce small, concentrated berries. After harvest, grapes undergo dual sorting—first by camera-assisted machine, then by hand. Cold soaking at 10°C for five days enhances colour and aroma extraction, followed by fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks for 12–15 days. After malolactic fermentation, the wine is aged for 18 months in French oak barrels (80% new, 20% third-use) to develop complexity and structure. Tasting notes Deep red with purple hues, the nose is rich with ripe black fruits, including blueberry and blackberry, complemented by notes of leather, black pepper, and sweet spices. French oak integration adds nuances of tobacco, vanilla, and toast. The palate is structured and elegant, with round tannins, balanced acidity, and a long, pleasing finish. Food match Ideal with roasted or grilled red meats, game, and rich stews, as well as mature cheeses. Grape 100% Syrah
