CHÂTEAU CANON 1er Grand Cru Classé Saint Emilion 2021
Maintains estate signature, with raspberry, red cherry, charred sandalwood and clove, with saffran, sage and white pepper adding extra layers and nuance. Successful in the vintage, one to look out for. Don't expect it to have entirely escaped the fingerprint of 2021 though, this is delicate and finessed but austere, and will need a good four or five years in bottle to soften further. 50% new oak, 40hl/h yield, harvest September 16 to October 8. Thomas Duclos consultant.
VOLNAY Domaine Joseph Drouhin 2021
(in 2021, about 20% of the blend is from the 1ers Frémiets and Clos des Chênes). A deft but still easily perceptible dollop of wood sets off airy and pretty aromas of red currant, dark cherry and plenty of floral elements. There is markedly better refinement to the utterly delicious and silky textured flavors that possess both good richness and a subtle minerality that slowly emerges on the balanced and persistent finale. This is a quality Volnay villages that is worth a look.
