Château Latour Martillac Rouge, (Magnum) 2020

Thanks to the long involvement of generations of the Kressmann family, and the recognition shown in 1953 by the classification of Graves, the wines of Château Latour-Martillac feature among the best of Pessac-Léognan. The 2020 Rouge has a deep ruby colour. The nose is complex, offering layered aromas of ripe black fruits, including blackcurrant, blackberry, and plum, accompanied by hints of violet, tobacco, cedar, and a touch of graphite. There are also subtle undertones of spice, a result of careful oak aging, which adds depth without overwhelming the fruit character. On the palate, the 2020 is structured and well-balanced, with fine-grained tannins and refreshing acidity. The flavours mirror the nose, with notes of dark berries, cassis, and plum, interwoven with earthy, mineral elements and a slight smokiness. The finish is long and persistent, with lingering notes of dark chocolate and spice, showcasing the wine’s aging potential.

Pommard, Jane Eyre 2023

The 2023 vintage at Jane Eyre Wines continues the tradition of producing refined and expressive wines with hallmark precision. Like 2022, 2023 was shaped by a warm growing season, but with the significant difference of ample rainfall when needed, keeping the soils well-nourished. The reds display lovely perfume, aromatics, and depth—qualities Jane prioritises in her Pinot Noirs—while the whites, after a slower start, have blossomed into vibrant, expressive examples of the vintage. "A new addition to the lineup, this biodynamic Pommard leans toward a Volnay style with its bright red fruit profile. Crunchy wild strawberries and cassis dominate, with a hint of white pepper and fine, grippy tannins. No new oak ensures purity and freshness." Our note Jane’s use of whole-cluster fermentation increased in 2023, coupled with colder soaks at the start of fermentation. This approach has resulted in wines with richer colours and enhanced complexity. While the vintage is already showing expressive youthful charm, it also holds great potential for aging, making 2023 both approachable and collectible. The wines evolve quickly, offering fresh insights with each tasting.
