CHÂTEAU LÉOVILLE POYFERRÉ 2ème Cru Classé Saint Julien 2020
The 2020 Léoville Poyferré is quite backward on the nose, gradually unfurling with aeration to reveal introspective black fruit, licorice and touches of bay leaf. Returning after 20 minutes the aromatics develop life-affirming pixelation. The palate is medium-bodied with fine delineation—very pure and silky in terms of texture. This is lavished in some high-quality new oak, but there is plenty of fruit underneath. It will take several years to fully cohere, but it should be worth waiting for. This is stunning. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.
PULIGNY MONTRACHET Les Climats Domaine Thomas-Collardot 2022
2022 is the last year where this blend of all the Puligny terroirs will include the 1ers crus. This does seem to build on the individual qualities in a good way. 950 litres have been made in all. Oak and white fruit on the nose, some tannins from the wood, a little bit of toast as well, fair concentration. Drink from 2027-2034. Tasted: October 2023.
