Luis Canas Reserva Seleccion de la Familia Rioja 2020
Bodegas Luis Cañas Reserva Selección de la Familia is a benchmark Rioja Alavesa Reserva from one of the region's most respected family-run wineries, producing wines of remarkable depth and character since 1928. Nestled at the foot of the Sierra de Cantabria, the estate oversees 870 individual vineyard plots of high-altitude vines averaging 45 years of age, on poor chalky-clay soils that yield naturally small, concentrated bunches. Aged for 20 months in French and American oak, this wine scored 92 Points from Tim Atkin MW in his 2024 Rioja Report and was Highly Commended at the Wine Merchant Awards 2025. Why You'll Love It This is Rioja Alavesa Reserva from Bodegas Luis Cañas, a family estate that has been a benchmark for terroir-driven Rioja since 1928. With 870 individual vineyard plots under its care, the estate is celebrated as one of the leading producers of Viñedo Singulares (single-vineyard wines). Director of viticulture Rubén Jiménez, named Grower of the Year 2023 by Tim Atkin MW, has played a pivotal role in recovering ancient grape varieties and mapping the Alavesa's most exceptional sites. The estate cultivates 350 hectares of vines averaging at least 45 years of age, planted across slopes and terraces of limestone and clay soils, where altitude and exposure ensure slow, balanced ripening. Grapes undergo 72 hours of cold maceration before fermentation in temperature-controlled sealed cement tanks at 26°C, with daily pump-overs. Aged for 20 months in a balanced mix of medium-toasted French and American oak, then bottled without filtration to safeguard natural complexity and ageing potential. One of the few Riojas to feature Cabernet Sauvignon alongside Tempranillo, adding graphite and blackcurrant leaf dimension to the red berry and bramble fruit.
