CHÂTEAUNEUF DU PAPE Réservé Domaine de la Vieille Julienne 2021
The 2021 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Réserve has come together superbly since I tasted the unfinished version last year. Deep and muscular, the 2021 showcases boatloads of ripe red fruits amid pencil shavings, thyme and licorice. Leafy gradations add another layer. Closing with excellent grip and length, the magnificent quality of the 2021 Réserve simply cannot be ignored. Kudos to Jean-Paul Daumen and his son Antoine.
VOSNE ROMANÉE 1er Cru Suchots Domaine J. Confuron Cotetidot 2005
The 2005 Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots 1er Cru is a disappointment. Earthy on the nose with stewed black tea, it lacks the fruité and floral tropes one expects from this village, particularly in a benevolent season like this. The palate is framed by slightly obdurate, grainy tannins, which are somewhat hard in the mouth and lack a sense of Pinoté on the finish. I know this grower has its followers who have regaled bottles with age… I remain unconvinced.
