CHIANTI CLASSICO Riserva Bugialla Poggerino 2022
The 2022 Chianti Classico Riserva Bugialla is gorgeous. Black cherry, new leather, spice, menthol and licorice fill out the layers effortlessly. A wine of structure and palate presence, the 2022 deftly balances power and finesse. It’s a superb wine, especially for a year marked by intense drought. All the Poggerino signatures are front and center. The 2022 spent two years in cask.
McHenry Hohnen Calgardup Vineyard Chardonnay, Margaret River 2021
Calgardup is situated just inland, benefiting from cooling breezes off the Indian Ocean. The soils here are predominantly schist and sand, the site has a gentle north-facing slope with the vines planted east-west to promoted even ripening as this is McHenry Hohnen's coolest vineyard. The nose opens with a pleasingly peachy fragrance, attractive soft talc, citrus oils, a little sea-spray, and an impression of cream but also rock pools. There is a sugar/honey richness that puts one in mind of Puligny or Chassagne-Montrachet, the oak and lees work combine to throw up notes of pie crust, and texturally this is silky and broad, soft yet palpably mineral and grippy. Lovely freshness, very moreish, and just a great flow to it.
