Cloudy Bay Te Wahi Pinot Noir 2018
Te Wahi 2015 is a blend of two remarkable Central Otago vineyard sites. The Calvert vineyard, on Felton Road in Bannockburn, sits at an altitude of 230m above sea-level and has uniform silty loam soils, formed as part of an ancient lake bed. It produces elegant, sweetly-scented and silky wines. The Northburn vineyard, a sloping site on the East bank of Lake Dunstan that rises from 220m to 275m, has a mixture of three soil types, all of glacial origin. The site is warm and dry during the grape-growing season, with cool nights, creating large diurnal temperature shifts. Northburn yields architectural and generous wines. On the nose it is fragrant bramble and wild strawberry notes with a hint of violet. On the palate it delivered an elegant core of concentrated damson and hedgerow fruit with fine tannins and vibrant freshness. Food Pairing: Enjoy with braised venison or similar dishes!
Pommard Premier Cru, Les Chaponnières, Domaine Launay-Horiot 2021
Domaine Launay-Horiot is consistent and over the past few vintages has culminated in something once again truly remarkable in 2021. This wine walks the fine line between classic Pommard structure and graceful delicacy. With a light-to-medium frame, it opens on brambly red fruit and earthy loam, wrapped in a peppery spice that lingers. The palate is honest and straightforward; sour cherry leads the way, followed by cereal and subtle earth notes, finishing with a gourmand flourish. Likened to Armand Rousseau by Neal Martin, Xavier Horiot fought an 11 year court battle with family members to keep the estate and reignite the work left by his beloved grandfather. In only his 7th vintage, this quietly spoken former fighter pilot only expresses his gratefulness for being able to farm his grandfather’s land.
