CÔTE RÔTIE La Viallière Domaine Clusel-Roch 2019
100% Syrah. Organic. Partial destemming. Fermentation with indigenous yeasts. Two years’ ageing in 228-litre oak, 25% new. Barrel sample. Tasted blind. Reticent nose that is suggesting blue and sweet blackberry fruit. Real linearity here with a subtle peppery note and very fine tannins. There is a seductive and mysterious feel to this wine, there is a lot of fruit and power waiting to come out over the coming years, such lovely freshness.
LA CHAPELLE D'AUSONE Grand Cru Saint Emilion 2021
Cloves and sage spices, touches of fennel, redcurrant, with a brightness to it that is rare in 2021, and fine tannins that give form to the fruit. Cleary lighter than in most years, but unquestionable finesse. As I noted during En Primeur, one of the rare 2nd wines that truly delivers in 2021n abd is one to look out for. Philippe Baillarguet cellar master, harvest October 4 to 6. 90% new oak (down from 100% in most years). Single point upgrade.
