CÔTE RÔTIE Les Grandes Places Domaine Clusel-Roch 2018
Saturated ruby. Ripe black and blue fruits, incense, olive and a strong violet note on the exotically perfumed nose, along with smoky mineral and spice flourishes. Sappy and broad in the mouth, showing impressive depth and fine definition to its ripe boysenberry, cherry liqueur, salty olive and floral pastille flavors. At once rich and lively in character, this finishes with impressive power, well-judged tannins and lingering spice, mineral and floral notes.
VOSNE ROMANÉE Les Violettes Domaine Christian Clerget 2021
(from .50 ha parcel planted in 1946; Les Violettes abuts Clos de Vougeot). A relatively high-toned nose offers up its array of red currant, cherry, sandalwood and exotic tea. The delicious, supple and moderately forward middleweight flavors are supported by fine-grained tannins on the complex and persistent if slightly lean finale. Like the Morey villages, I suspect that this will flesh out if given a few years of keeping and my projected range offers the benefit of the doubt.
