El Escoces Volante El Puno Tinto 2021
El Escocés Volante El Puño Tinto is a serious and elegant red wine from Calatayud in Aragón, Spain , crafted from 100% Garnacha grown on 70 to 100 year old bush vines at 1,000 to 1,100 metres altitude near the villages of Acered and Alarba. Vegan, sustainable, and made by Master of Wine Norrel Robertson, it is one of the most compelling expressions of high-altitude old-vine Garnacha available anywhere. Why You'll Love It El Escocés Volante, meaning 'The Flying Scotsman', is the project of Norrel Robertson MW and his family in Aragón. Robertson's wine journey led him to the extreme high-altitude vineyards of Calatayud, where ancient bush vines dry-grown in slate and quartzite soils at over 1,000 metres produce fruit of extraordinary concentration and character. Found amongst mountain herbs, almond and olive trees, these old vines yield less than 1.5kg of fruit per vine, a testament to the rigour and commitment behind every bottle. The result is a wine of real depth, complexity, and a sense of place that is impossible to replicate. Vineyard & Production Garnacha vines aged 70 to 100 years are cultivated at 1,000 to 1,100 metres altitude in slate and quartzite soils, dry-grown with annual rainfall of just 200 to 300mm. All fruit is rigorously selected, with these old vines yielding less than 1.5kg per vine. After picking, grapes are held for a minimum of 48 hours in a cool room before bunch selection, then crushed into tanks and cold soaked at 8 degrees for up to 10 days. Temperature is then allowed to rise to bring on wild fermentation, with tanks plunged for gentle extraction and some extended maceration to add weight and complexity. 40% of the wine is aged in old, used French oak barrels of 500 to 650 litres with low to medium toast, before blending with some lees stirring and bottling with light filtration and no fining. Tasting Notes Concentrated aromas of black fruit and spice on the nose, lifted by notes of violet and thyme. The palate is serious and complex, wi
Villa by Errazuriz 2022
Villa by Errazuriz is a refined, structured red wine from the Don Maximiano vineyard in Chile's Aconcagua Valley, one of the country's most prestigious wine-growing regions. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon , Carmenere, and Petit Verdot from some of the estate's oldest vines, it delivers fresh red fruit, elegant tannins, and a vertical, precise character that reflects the valley's unique terroir. A benchmark expression of Chilean fine wine from one of the country's most celebrated producers. Why You'll Love It Errazuriz is one of Chile's great wine dynasties, and the Don Maximiano estate in the Aconcagua Valley is their crown jewel. Villa is the estate's approachable expression, drawing on the same exceptional vineyard blocks as the flagship Don Maximiano Founder's Reserve but crafted for earlier enjoyment. The combination of volcanic and alluvial soils, hillside aspect, and the cooling Pacific breezes that enter the valley each evening produces wines of remarkable freshness and precision. At this price, it is one of the most compelling bottles from South America. Vineyard & Production The grapes are sourced from the Don Maximiano vineyard in the Aconcagua Valley, where Cabernet Sauvignon vines planted in 1978 and Carmenere planted in 1993 grow on north and northeast-facing hillsides with slopes of 5-25 degrees. The volcanic, colluvial, and alluvial soils with 30-50% stone content provide excellent drainage and low to moderate vigour, concentrating flavour naturally. The long dry season with moderately warm days is tempered by soft evening breezes from the Pacific, preserving natural acidity and aromatic freshness. The wine is aged for 18 months in French oak barrels (35% new), with 5% in concrete egg and 5% in foudre, adding complexity and texture while maintaining the wine's fresh, vertical character. Tasting Notes Bright ruby red in colour with violet sparkles. The nose offers aromas of fresh rose petals, pomegranate, strawberry, and raspberry, with soft notes of to
