Geoff Merrill Henley Shiraz 2008

Geoff Merrill Henley Shiraz is a full-bodied, complex red wine from McLaren Vale, Australia, made from 100% Shiraz. With 14.5% ABV, it displays a sophisticated combination of dark fruits, spice, and savory earthy notes, reflecting both age and terroir. Meet the producer Geoff Merrill Wines was founded by Geoff Merrill, a lifelong South Australian winemaker with deep roots in the Barossa Valley and Mount Hurtle region. Awarded the Jimmy Watson Trophy in 2005, Geoff is celebrated for producing wines of precision, depth, and regional identity. Production Sourced from rolling hillside vineyards near the coast, the grapes are carefully harvested and vinified to capture freshness and varietal expression. Ageing and careful maturation develop the wine’s complex, layered profile, balancing fruit, spice, and earthy notes. Tasting notes Deep, intense ruby in colour. The nose evolves with aeration, showing black pepper, herbs, clove, and stewed plums, followed by aged notes of dark soy, leather, chocolate, and roast beef gravy. The palate is fresh and structured, with spice, developed berry fruits, hints of coffee, and savory complexity. Food match Ideal with aged steak and Bordelaise sauce or smoky barbecued meats. Grape 100% Shiraz Awards and Press Comments James Halliday: Recognised for exceptional complexity and maturity, showcasing McLaren Vale’s terroir. Wine Companion: “Henley is a benchmark Shiraz from McLaren Vale, with layered aromas, freshness, and a refined, savory palate.” Wine Spectator: Praises its elegance, structure, and age-worthy development.

Volnay Premier Cru 'Les Taillepieds', Domaine de Montille 2017

Taillepieds is a class apart in Volnay - the Queen of Cote des Beaune reds, and a regular contender for elevation to Grand Cru. Gravel on limestone soils give a bracing salinity to the wines which help season the rolling waves of intense and varied aromas and flavours of a vineyard that includes vines over eighty years old. One of our most sought-after reds every Burgundy campaign, and with good reason. Of the vintage, winemaker Brian Sieve at de Montille says 2017 is built for serious pleasure, with svelte tannins and juicy structure holding plenty of strawberries and raspberries. Preferring to pick early when grapes still have two thirds tartaric acid, and only a third malic acid, he believes the domaine’s 2017 reds have the supple richness and concentration of 2016 with the quantity, acidity and primary red fruit profile of 2011. Easy to understand, balanced and graceful, with alcohol bordering 13%, 2017 is good news for drinkers and yet he sees nothing to suggest the wines won’t age well.
