Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes, Domaine Henri Magnien 2023
The 2023 vintage at Domaine Henri Magnien stands out as a rare combination of exceptional quality and abundant yields, a balance seldom achieved in Burgundy. Meticulous grape selection during harvest ensured that only the finest fruit was used. Benefiting from a favourable flowering period, the vines produced well-formed bunches with a notable number of berries. The resulting wines are defined by their harmony: soft tannins, vibrant acidity, and a well-integrated richness. "A selection of fruit from eight plots, including centenarian vines from "Epointures" (planted in 1915), results in a deeply structured wine. Pronounced notes of cherry, loganberry, and liquorice dominate, while spice adds complexity. A fine balance of energy, tension, and acidity leads to a linear and precise finish. The wine is texturally rich, with grippy yet rounded tannins. Aged in 30% new oak." Our note This vintage displays a marked shift toward dark red fruit and spiced profiles compared to 2022, with enhanced freshness and balance. Achieving perfect ripeness was crucial, as the domaine opted for destemming all fruit, avoiding the use of whole bunches. The wines, crafted entirely from the Magnien clone of Pinot Noir developed in 1850, exhibit a clear expression of terroir alongside their refined structure and vitality.
Vosne-Romanée, Domaine Jacques Cacheux 2021
The 2021 Vosne-Romanée from Domaine Jacques Cacheux is a real treat for Pinot Noir lovers who appreciate elegance with depth. It’s medium-bodied but with enough concentration to feel substantial - juicy red fruit, soft berry compote and a touch of darker fruit mingle alongside gently firm tannins and a slice of minerality. Always on the lookout for growers under the radar, especially those with interesting parcels in Vosne-Romanée, and we were very impressed with Jacques Cacheux’ 2021 vintage. Patrice Cacheax, Jacques’ son, has run the domaine since 1994 helped by his son Charles. As an aside Charles’ sister Marianne is one half of the dynamic duo Pierre and Marianne Duroché and we can’t help thinking some of their successful maison wines might have fruit sourced from Cacheaux’ holdings...
