Kilchoman Machir Bay Single Malt Whisky
Kilchoman Machir Bay is a signature Islay single malt whisky, renowned for its harmonious blend of coastal peat smoke and vibrant fruit character. Named after one of Islay’s most picturesque beaches, Machir Bay reflects the distillery’s commitment to traditional methods and local provenance. It is matured in a combination of ex-bourbon barrels and Oloroso sherry butts, resulting in a whisky that balances classic Islay smokiness with layers of sweetness and complexity. Kilchoman, one of Scotland’s few farm distilleries, grows and malts its own barley, ensuring full traceability from field to bottle. On the nose, Machir Bay opens with lemon zest, vanilla, and a distinct coastal influence , followed by floral intensity and ripe stone fruits such as peaches and pears. The palate delivers bursts of tropical fruit, dried sultanas, and warming smoke , underpinned by honeyed malt, butterscotch, and rich sweetness . Hints of sherry-soaked fruit, cracked black pepper, and sea salt emerge, adding depth and texture. The finish is long-lasting and layered , with citrus sweetness and maritime peat smoke lingering gracefully. This expression is a compelling introduction to Kilchoman’s house style, offering a well-rounded and memorable Islay experience that appeals to both newcomers and seasoned whisky enthusiasts.

However as single malt lovers may know, the relationship between the barrels and the maturing spirit is critical. We noted that the small cask size gives up to 60% greater contact with the wood compared to some of the larger sizes used today, thus greatly intensifying the maturation process. It was decided to recreate some of the Quarter Casks and the flavours they produce. We transferred some still maturing Laphroaig from our larger style barrels into the Quarter Casks. There then followed a further periods of maturation in our original Dunnage Warehouse No1. The result surprised and delighted us. The additional oak influence creates a soft sweetness and velvety feel when first tasted, then
