Kumeu River Estate Chardonnay 2023
Kumeu River Estate Chardonnay is a premium expression of Chardonnay drawn from six carefully selected vineyard sites within the Kumeu region. Only the finest grapes are chosen to maintain the consistent high standard of the Estate label, reflecting over 35 years of dedication to quality winemaking. The wine is made to emphasise purity of fruit, elegance, and balance, with minimal intervention to highlight the character of the Kumeu terroir. Meet the producer Kumeu River is one of New Zealand’s most respected wineries, renowned for producing world-class Chardonnays that reflect the cool-climate conditions of the Kumeu region. The winery has built its reputation over decades for precise viticulture and meticulous winemaking practices. Production The grapes are hand-harvested and whole-bunch pressed. Fermentation is carried out with indigenous yeasts in 100% French oak barrels, with 100% undergoing malolactic fermentation. No new oak is used, relying instead on 1- and 2-year-old barrels to provide balance and subtle complexity. The wine matures for 11 months in barrel, resulting in a refined, elegant style. Tasting notes The wine opens with fragrant lemon aromas accented by hints of white peach. On the palate it is silky, balanced, and fresh, with a precise citrus-driven finish. This Chardonnay is approachable now but will continue to develop beautifully over 4–6 years of bottle age. Food match Pairs beautifully with lightly cooked fish, seafood, roasted chicken, and creamy pasta dishes. Grape Chardonnay 100% Vinification Hand harvested, whole-bunch pressed, indigenous yeast fermentation, 100% barrel fermentation, 100% malolactic fermentation, matured 11 months in French oak barrels.
Terroir Noble Bourgogne Blanc, Vincent Girardin 2021
"‘Terroir Noble’ indicates the hallowed appellations of Meursault, Puligny and Chassagne from where the grape are grown. Elegant, fresh and zingy with citrus, lemon and lime, fruit and a silky finish. Tremendous value for money." Our note Having started with a tiny 3ha back in the 80s, Vincent Girardin now owns 14ha of enviably sited parcels, with another 19ha on lease, and this is practically the first in-house vintage for the Domaine. Head winemaker Eric Germain's steady conversion to biodynamics, earlier picking, reduced usage of new oak and earlier racking into neutral barrels all mean the focus is on terroir expression and energy.
