La Giaretta, I Quadretti Amarone Classico 2018
Sourced from La Giaretta's oldest and most prized vineyards in the heart of Valpolicella, I Quadretti is the flagship Amarone—crafted only from the finest grapes of each vintage. Aged for around three years in small French oak (durmast) barrels and then refined in bottle for 10–12 months, it offers a deep ruby red colour, impressive structure, and a complex bouquet of spices. At its core, though, it stays true to Amarone’s signature notes of cherry and wild berries. This is a wine built for bold flavours—perfect alongside game, braised beef, grilled meats, aged cheeses, and cured meats. It’s also a superb wine for quiet contemplation. For the best experience, open it ahead of time and serve at 18°C. "The wines from this under the-radar-property La Giaretta, in the hill town of Valgatara, are amongst the most popular in our portfolio with club members. Their flagship is the stunning, single vineyard Amarone Classico Riserva “I Quadretti”, produced in miniscule quantities, which is a powerhouse of a wine, with a super ripe cherry nose of Kirsch and Black Forest Gateaux, together with loam and highly polished leather. Despite its’s almost port-like richness, and sweetness, the palate retains a wonderful fruit-driven freshness and energy. Talented winemaker Francesca Nicoli, together with husband and agronomist Francesco, ensures unfailingly every year that the wine quality here deserves to be far more widely recognised. One of our best kept secrets!" Tom, Head Wine Guru
Tenuta San Leonardo, San Leonardo 2020
For fifteen years, we have unapologetically beaten the drum for San Leonardo, and it’s fantastic to see its critical acclaim and global recognition growing year after year. Jancis Robinson describes it as “ Surely the most successful Bordeaux blend of Northern Italy ”, a wine of “ astoundingly consistent quality… beautifully low-key and like the most refined red Bordeaux imaginable. ” The 2020 release continues this extraordinary lineage, following in the footsteps of the back-to-back 98-point 2018 and 2019 vintages, and has just been crowned 'Red Wine of the Year 2026' by The Essential Guide to Italian Wines (DoctorWine), with founder Daniele Cernilli praising its “ unquestionable finesse and elegance ” and consistency stretching back to the first vintage in 1982 (what a year to start!). "The latest vintage is a remarkable wine, fine-boned, pure and detailed, with herbal fruit, filigree tannins and the estate’s signature vein of spicy acidity. The nose is pure and herbaceous-led, rosehips, hawthorn, and wild mountain herbs from the carménère lead the aromatics, supported by classic Cabernet lead pencil, cedar and forest berries and spicier Merlot red plums. The palate is sapid and fresh, with crystalline blue and red fruits, capturing a floral purity, that progress in a linear fashion to the savoury, saline, dry spice-inflected finish. Carrying just 12.5% alcohol, this mid-weight charmer reinforces San Leonardo’s deserved reputation for paying homage to classic Bordeaux, focussed on energy and elegance." Tom Harrow
