MAZIS CHAMBERTIN Grand Cru Domaine Faiveley 2020
The 2020 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru does not fully deliver the complexity of its peers, though there is plenty of red and blue fruit, strawberry wine gums and lavender. There are some Brettanomyces here, a bit sauvage. But I'm still drawn to the aromatics. The palate is medium-bodied with an almost creamy texture, brambly red fruit with deft use of whole bunches lending a discreet pepperiness. There's a lot going on in this wine as it unfolds with time, a classy operator. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.
NUITS SAINT GEORGES Vignes Centenaires 1er Cru La Richemone Domaine Christophe Perrot-Minot 2017
The 2017 Nuit-Saint-Georges La Richemone Vieilles Vignes "Cuvée Ultra" has an attractive bouquet of sous-bois and tobacco-infused red berry fruit, very elegant in style and nicely focused. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, a subtle marine influence and a tang of sour cherry and brine toward the persistent finish. Excellent.
