Meerlust Chardonnay 2023
Meerlust Chardonnay is a refined, linear and beautifully mineral white from one of Stellenbosch's most historic and celebrated estates, crafted from two of the estate's distinctive terroirs: granitic slopes at Compagniesdrift and rocky greywacke and shale at Quarry. Barrel and concrete fermented, with the cooling maritime influence of False Bay preserving freshness and precision, this is Cape Chardonnay of real elegance and character. Why You'll Love It Meerlust Estate has been in the hands of the Myburgh family since 1756, and under the guidance of eighth-generation Hannes Myburgh and winemaker Wim Truter, the estate combines centuries of tradition with modern precision to craft elegant, terroir-driven wines from Stellenbosch. The slow ripening afforded by the cooling sea influence from False Bay, just five kilometres away, is the defining factor in the estate's white wines, preserving natural acidity and producing Chardonnay of real focus, structure and longevity. Vineyard & Production Sourced from two distinctive terroirs on the estate: granitic slopes at Compagniesdrift and rocky greywacke and shale at Quarry. Grapes are hand-picked by experienced teams and gently pressed, with juice settled overnight before fermentation. Fermentation takes place in a combination of new, second-fill and third-fill 300-litre French oak barrels, with a small portion fermented in concrete tanks. The wine is matured in barrel until the desired structure and complexity are achieved, then lightly fined before bottling. Tasting Notes Bright pale yellow with green highlights. The nose shows apricot, peach, pear, lemon zest, floral notes and hints of toasted almonds. The palate is linear and structured, with focused stone fruit flavours, sleek minerality, crisp acidity and a long, refreshing finish. ' Poppy and Shayne Hammond, with a selected group of like-minded people, set out to forge their own direction in making wines with tradition flowing through the glass. It is the intention of Poppies Martinborough to make beautifully hand-crafted wines that simply show the character and evoke the varietal flavours and purity of expression from the land and the hands of the makers. Staying true to outcome is vital and when you drink their wines from any different season you will always see the family resemblance¦ thus a true Poppies Martinborough wine is made how they love to drink. The Hammonds strongly believe that they are simply caretakers of the land. From this they farm their vineyards with a minimalist approach, respecting the power Mother Nature possesses, never interfering, more allowing her strength to direct. A biological and organic approach to farming is the preference, although not certified, within a commercial footprint - they are cautious and respectful utilising science, technology and understanding the past. They live through their land for their wines. '
