Muga Reserva 2020

' Bodegas Muga is a family business founded by Isaac Muga and Aurora Cano in 1932, located in the historic Barrio de La Estacion (Station Quarter) of Haro. It is home to both the most traditional winemaking methods and the latest cutting-edge techniques. They are the only cellar in Spain with a master cooper and three in-house barrel-makers. Bodegas Muga vineyards are located on the foot of the Montes Obarenses, within the area called Rioja Alta. The site climate is exceptional due to, on the one hand, the singular geography and orientation of the vines and on the other hand, the surrounding climates - Mediterranean, Atlantic and Continental climates are combined harmoniously thus creating a suitable climate for growing top quality grapes. The soil in this area is mostly clay and limestone, divided into small terroirs with different physical and chemical qualities between them; each terroir has a unique and defined personality. This variety of climatic influences and different soils influence many stages of the vine growth cycle. The growth will be complex and delicate, key to the potential quality of the wines in this area. The grape varieties grown are Tempranillo, Garnacha (Grenache), Mazuelo (Carignan) and Graciano for the red wines; and Viura and Malvasia are used for the white wines. Reserva 2020 Manual harvesting. Fermentation in wooden vats with controlled temperatures. Aged for 24 months in casks made in our own coopers' workshop with selection of the sources. The origin of the wood is 80% French oak and 20% American. Before bottling the wine is fined using fresh egg whites. It then spends a minimum of 12 months in our bottle cellar to give it greater complexity and finesse. This wine will be an excellent accompaniment to meat dishes like a ribeye steak, as well as with charcuterie and all kinds of casseroles. '

Thousand Candles Gathering Field Red 2019

' Thousand Candles is a premium estate in the heart of the Yarra Valley. Its name comes from a 19th century account by a European settler, who witnessed an ancient indigenous ceremony that granted free passage into the lands around the property to various tribes. Describing the tribesman dramatically holding aloft their firesticks, he remarked that it was as if the ˜twilight of the evening had been interrupted by a thousand candles...'.Viticulturist Stuart Proud works organically and biodynamically (though uncertified) and with as little intervention in the winery as possible. Red Blend ''The fruit for this wine comes from our high density vineyard planted with Bordeaux varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Malbec. The block has 7353 vines per hectare. Row width is 1.6m. Vines are spaced 80cm apart. The cordon wire is 50cm above the ground. We planted the block in this way to really allow the site and soil to be truly expressed in the wine. Planted in 2011 and 2012 the vines are coming into the beginning of their prime and showing an intensity of flavour and fine tannins. Each year the proportion of varieties in the blend is different but always from the same block and high density, low yielding vines. All fruit was hand picked, sorted, destemmed and fermented in small batches for 3 weeks with only an occasional pump over. Aged in older French barriques and hogsheads for 9 months.'' '
