Nikka, Miyagikyo Single Malt, 2020
Nikka Whisky, founded by Masataka Taketsuru, is one of Japan’s most esteemed whisky producers. The Miyagikyo Distillery, established in 1969, is celebrated for its lighter, fruitier style of whiskies, providing a counterpoint to the robust character of Nikka’s Yoichi Distillery. This expression is known for its approachable yet nuanced profile, embodying elegance and harmony. It’s a whisky that appeals to both enthusiasts and newcomers, showcasing the softer side of Japanese single malts. Nose: Full-flavoured, rich. Initially, concentrated iris notes hint at the extreme intensity of the nose. It then develops aromas of malted barley, exotic fruit (banana), liquorice and camphor. Notes of burnt wood and ash progressively settle over the aromatic palette. Long after, white flowers and beeswax make an appearance. Palate: Firm, lively. Malted barley is at the heart of the palate, coated in herbaceous, liquorice, spiced (ginger, cinnamon) and chocolate tones. Very elegant, the mid-palate also delivers plenty of energy and as it draws to a close, fresh tobacco leaves and coconut intertwine to create a natural symphony of aromas. Finish: Long, soft. It evokes the scent of wilted roses. Fine tannins balance its tangy character (lemon, grapefruit). It lingers on notes of tobacco, spices (cardamom, ginger), toasted nuts and stewed fruits (apple, damson). The final nose reveals exotic notes (lychee).
Tenuta San Leonardo, Grappa Stravecchia, - 50cl
San Leonardo’s barrel-aged grappa is crafted from the estate’s own pomace and distilled by Master Distiller Bruno Franceschini in Cavaion Veronese. Aged for around five years in French oak barriques previously used for San Leonardo’s wines, it gains a beautiful depth, gentle spice, and a distinctly elegant aromatic profile. " This Grappa Stravecchia has a characteristic amber-gold appearance. Full-bodied, aromatic and subtly elegant, a seriously good spirit with a unique sensory profile. It is distilled in limited quantities and is to be savoured in a reflective mood. " San Leonardo Presented in a stylish decanter, it’s as impressive on the eye as it is in the glass, making it a perfect gift for any grappa lover.
