Nikka, Miyagikyo Single Malt, 2020

Nikka Whisky, founded by Masataka Taketsuru, is one of Japan’s most esteemed whisky producers. The Miyagikyo Distillery, established in 1969, is celebrated for its lighter, fruitier style of whiskies, providing a counterpoint to the robust character of Nikka’s Yoichi Distillery. This expression is known for its approachable yet nuanced profile, embodying elegance and harmony. It’s a whisky that appeals to both enthusiasts and newcomers, showcasing the softer side of Japanese single malts. Nose: Full-flavoured, rich. Initially, concentrated iris notes hint at the extreme intensity of the nose. It then develops aromas of malted barley, exotic fruit (banana), liquorice and camphor. Notes of burnt wood and ash progressively settle over the aromatic palette. Long after, white flowers and beeswax make an appearance. Palate: Firm, lively. Malted barley is at the heart of the palate, coated in herbaceous, liquorice, spiced (ginger, cinnamon) and chocolate tones. Very elegant, the mid-palate also delivers plenty of energy and as it draws to a close, fresh tobacco leaves and coconut intertwine to create a natural symphony of aromas. Finish: Long, soft. It evokes the scent of wilted roses. Fine tannins balance its tangy character (lemon, grapefruit). It lingers on notes of tobacco, spices (cardamom, ginger), toasted nuts and stewed fruits (apple, damson). The final nose reveals exotic notes (lychee).

The Nikka Tailored,

Nikka Whisky, founded by Masataka Taketsuru, is one of Japan’s most esteemed whisky producers. The Miyagikyo Distillery, established in 1969, is celebrated for its lighter, fruitier style of whiskies, providing a counterpoint to the robust character of Nikka’s Yoichi Distillery. Nose: Smooth and round, the nose takes us into a fruity universe with apple, apricot and whitefleshed fruits. Strong presence of honey, as well as chocolate notes with orange candied peel aromas. Palate: Gourmet. The mouth offers a very interesting duality. On one side, a pastry style marked by vanilla and kouglof and, on the other, the bitterness that is detected with dark chocolate and citrus zest such as tangerine and orange. Finish: In the line of the mouth, the bitterness is counterbalanced by slightly toasted notes that reveal the coexistence of vanilla sweetness and fruity bitterness.
