Pernand-Vergelesses Premier Cru 'Les Vergelesses', Domaine Rapet Père & Fils, (Magnum) 2023
Domaine Rapet, located on the edge of the Hautes-Côtes d’Or, operates with a clear commitment to organic viticulture, with all vineyards certified as such. The domaine’s holdings include a significant proportion of vines planted in 1960, now providing the estate with mature, low-yielding vineyards that yield concentrated and terroir-expressive fruit. "A wine of grace and depth, showcasing the minerality of its terroir. The red cherry fruit is pure and vibrant, with silky tannins providing a delicate structure. The finish is long and driven by a fine sucrosity that enhances its length and elegance." Our note The viticultural approach is meticulous, with leaf removal carried out for both red and white grape varieties. This technique ensures optimal ripening conditions by improving sunlight exposure and air circulation within the canopy, thereby reducing disease pressure. During vinification, approximately 70% of the grapes are destemmed, while the remaining 30% are left as whole bunches, contributing to additional aromatic complexity and fine tannin structure. In the cellar, Domaine Rapet favours a gravity-flow system to minimise mechanical handling and preserve the integrity of the fruit. The fermentations are gentle, with no punch-downs, aiming for a more delicate extraction. Ageing is carried out in a diverse range of vessels, including large 1,200-litre foudres, 650-litre barrels, concrete eggs, and 750-litre amphorae. This nuanced use of different materials and volumes allows for precision in highlighting the character of each cuvée, balancing fruit purity with textural complexity.
Volnay Premier Cru 'Clos de la Chapelle' Monopole, Domaine Clos de la Chapelle 2022
Resurrected by life-long Burgundy lover Mark O’Connell in 2011 and our dear friend Pierre Meurgey, Domaine Clos de la Chapelle is headquartered at the Chateau de Bligny, owned by Pierre and no less than Dominique Lafon. The talent behind the new Domaine is considerable, and the wines are already getting rave reviews from the likes of Allen Meadows (Burghound), Neal Martin & Jasper Morris. We were so impressed by the wines after tasting the 2022s and were surprised to hear that they had little presence in the UK, so it is a real pleasure to offer these wines. "A narrow strip of vines on the northern border of Clos de la Bousse d’Or, which it is presumed to have originally been part of. Raspberry, red plum, rose petal, grilled herbs, and a sweet, medicinal note on the nose. Perfumed, supple palate, sits high in the cheekbones after initial red fruit sorbet attack, with elegant, fine-boned tannins and liquoricey, hoisin finish." Tom Harrow, Head Wine Guru
