For 25 years, the D’Onofrio family have owned and operated Cascina del Colle winery, providing an authentic brand of native Italian grapes to the world. The name of the winery means “Farmhouse on the hill”, and the family’s vineyards are dotted around the Apennine foothills, in the Villamagna municipality of Abruzzo. With the eastern coast of Italy just 15km away, Villamagna’s terroir is caught between mountains and the sea. Its vineyards lie at an average elevation of 250 metres above sea level, perfect for growing fresh, acidic white wines. Pecorino is a lesser-known grape on the international market, but Cascina del Colle’s Superiore expression is a perfect introduction to this crisp and floral white varietal. “Aimè” opens with a flourish, scents of apple and pear are enhanced by herbaceous marjoram and floral notes. The name is taken from the French for “beloved”, and this is an easy wine to love. It is lightly golden in the glass, with some attractive greenish hues. On the palate, it is fresh and linear, with notes of baked apple, subtle oak, spice and light touches of minerality. It is a perfect pairing for some fresh mozzarella cheese, quiches or seafood.
