Krohn has a well-deserved reputation for the quality of its Colheita Ports. These single vintage Ports are matured for an extended period in oak, developing a rich mahogany colour, complex aromas, and flavours with a silky, elegant texture. Meet the producer Wiese & Krohn was founded in 1865 by two Norwegians, Theodor Wiese and Dankert Krohn, originally shipping Ports to Scandinavia. Today, the house continues to craft high-quality Ports with precision, tradition, and a focus on single-vintage expression. Production The grapes are sourced from the Quinta do Retiro estate and neighbouring vineyards in the Rio Torto Valley, where old vines grow in schistous soils. Fermentation takes place at Quinta do Retiro Novo and is halted with the addition of grape spirit to preserve natural sweetness. The wine is aged in 547-litre oak barrels (traditional ‘pipes’) and larger casks at Krohn’s cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia. Colheita Ports typically spend at least 10 years in wood before being bottled unfiltered to capture maximum complexity. Tasting notes Aromas of fresh figs, butterscotch, muscovado sugar, and nutmeg. The palate is rich and expressive, with layers of plum, walnuts, hazelnuts, cinnamon, and raisins.
