The 2023 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Terrazze San Leolino offers a captivating mix of intense fruit and polished tannins. It lacks a bit of the mid-palate intensity of some of the other wines in the range, but more than makes up for that with its drive and persistence. Brisk acids, blood orange, pomegranate and exotic spice are some of the many notes that build over time. This is so fascinating to taste next to the Sorbo and Flaccianello, which are also from Panzano. After restoring the ancient, terraced slope beneath the San Leolino chapel, the Manetti family launched this single-vineyard bottling with the 2019 vintage. Like Vigna del Sorbo, it comes from the township of Panzano but is more profusely fragrant and linear in character - though there is no lack of power. Aromas of sandalwood, liquorice, rose and smoky black tea entice. A brightly lit mouthful of fleshy red cherry and mint-infused dark brambles follows. This vibrates with tension and tangy minerals, while fine, grainy tannins provide an unwavering ballast. Aromas of wild rosemary and thyme segue into black cherry, blackberry, violet and mineral flavors in this dense, powerful red. Balanced but needs time for all of the elements to come together. This finishes long and complex, echoing a fruity, savory mix and a vibrant, energetic feel. Best from 2029 through 2048.
