Batuta 2014 from Niepoort is a refined and elegant red wine from the Douro region of Portugal. The grapes are sourced from Quinta do Carril, a north-facing vineyard over 70 years old, and from centenarian vineyards near Quinta de Nápoles. Crafted with meticulous care, Batuta undergoes long maceration with minimal extraction, producing a wine that is concentrated yet fresh, with a delicate and nuanced character. Meet the producer Niepoort, a historic Douro estate, has a long tradition of producing wines that combine power, elegance, and longevity. The estate carefully manages old vineyards to maintain balance, freshness, and expressive terroir in every vintage. Production The 2014 harvest began in early September to preserve high acidity and avoid overripe fruit, resulting in a slightly lower yield but exceptional quality. Grapes were hand-picked and fermented in cone-shaped stainless steel vats and wooden barrels, with maceration for around 60 days. The wine underwent malolactic fermentation and aged for 22 months in French oak barrels, 25% of which were new. Tasting notes Batuta 2014 displays a bright, light ruby colour. Its nose is deep, complex, and austere, with mineral notes intertwined with floral hints, cocoa, and wild berries, layered over subtle oak. On the palate, the wine is fine and elegant, with a silky texture, firm structure, and polished tannins. Despite its youth, it is balanced, precise, and shows freshness and minerality from the old vineyards. The finish is long, refined, and seductive. Food match Versatile with food, it pairs beautifully with a range of meat dishes, as well as seafood such as monkfish, squid, or grilled octopus.
