Drink it now or cellar for up to 20 years. It is recommended to decant it for an hour. Founded in 2010, Thistledown is a South Australian winery that sources its grapes from selected winemakers in the area’s premier regions (Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Adelaide Hills, and Langhorne Creek). Founders and Masters of Wine Giles Cooke and Fergal Tynan, work with Peter Leske to produce exceptional, small-batch wines that are expressive of Australia’s great terroirs. The Grenache grapes are hand-picked from a vineyard with vines planted in 1952 and trained in a bush style on sandy soils. The wine is fermented in cement and then aged in oak and cement for approximately 10 months before bottling. The result is an extremely expressive wine that reflects the characteristics of the site of origin. Thistledown Sands of Time Grenache is a powerful and intense wine, but never opulent with delicious aromas of ripe red fruit and blood orange, floral notes of lilac, and hints of rose water and violets. On the palate, it is structured and consistent, juicy and lively. It has a well-integrated tannic backbone and a smooth texture. The finish is long, elegant, and tasty. It’s an absolute must-try with Asian duck and pork, or pork tacos.
