Drink it now or cellar for up to 10 years. No need to decant, but best to open it half an hour before service. Founded in 1975 by Eugenio Campolmi and Cinzia Merli, Le Macchiole is an established organic winery located in Castagneto Carducci, Tuscany, and now managed by Eugenio and Cinzia's children. The vineyards extend over approximately 35 hectares, where mainly international varieties are grown. Here, the vines are planted in sandy-clay soils, rich in minerals, and enjoy a breezy Mediterranean climate. First produced in 2004, Le Macchiole's Bolgheri Rosso is a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah grapes selected and harvested from several of the estate's vineyards (Vignone 1999, Casa Nuova 2009-2013, Sommi 2015, and Puntone 2020). After harvesting and fermenting in stainless steel, the finished wine ages for 10 months in a mix of used barriques (70%) and concrete (30%). In the glass, the wine reveals an intense ruby red color. Its aromatic profile is broad and exuberant, with fruity notes of plum, blackberry, currant, and cherry, hints of grapefruit and licorice, and delicate spicy undertones. On the palate, it is lively, smooth, and fruity. It is full-bodied and powerful, with fine, smooth tannins and a long, elegant finish. Try it with Beef Wellington.
