Funkstille Gruner Veltliner 2025
Funkstille — meaning ‘radio silence’ — is a carefully curated range of Austrian wines designed to bring a sense of calm and clarity to the modern wine drinker. Collaborating with a 16th-generation producer in Niederösterreich, the range highlights Austria's most celebrated grape varieties in distinctive, eye-catching packaging. This Grüner Veltliner comes from sustainably certified vineyards in Weinviertel, with subtle exotic aromas complementing ripe pear and fresh citrus notes, a dry yet rich palate of melon and grapefruit, and a crisp, zippy finish. Why You'll Love It This is Grüner Veltliner from Funkstille, produced in collaboration with a 16th-generation family estate in Niederösterreich whose commitment to sustainability is exceptional. The vineyards are certified by agroVet, with the estate producing its own fertiliser and seeds for cover crops, and young vines protected from dry stress with straw from surrounding fields. The winery itself is energy-neutral — generating more energy than it consumes via a biogas plant and photovoltaic system. Grapes are harvested carefully by hand and machine in the early morning from 15-year-old vines in Weinviertel, grown on a mix of loess, clay, and granite soils at 230–300 metres above sea level on south-facing terraces. No malolactic fermentation is carried out, preserving the variety's characteristic freshness and acidity, with eight weeks on the lees adding texture and complexity. Why You'll Love It Assyrtiko is one of the world's great white grapes, prized for its combination of vibrant acidity, savoury salinity, and aromatic precision. While most associated with Santorini, the variety thrives equally in the cool highland vineyards of the Peloponnese, where altitude tempers warmth and produces wines of real finesse. Godessa is an accessible, beautifully crafted introduction to the style, with no oak influence and a clean, fruit-forward profile that makes it endlessly versatile at the table. Vineyard & Production The vineyards are situated in the highlands of the Peloponnese, benefiting from a cool Mediterranean climate where altitude preserves natural freshness and acidity. Sandy soils over limestone provide excellent drainage and contribute to the wine's characteristic minerality and precision. Fermentation takes place over two weeks in stainless steel tanks to preserve aromatic purity, followed by a minimum of three months on fine lees to build texture and subtle complexity. No oak influence. Tasting Notes The nose opens with vibrant citrus aromas layered with delicate notes of white blossom. On the palate, the wine is well-structured and lively, driven by bright acidity and a distinctive savoury salinity that adds depth and tension. The finish is fresh and fruit-forward, lingering with clarity and balance. Perfect Pairings A natural partner for fish, grilled seafood, and white sauce dishes. Also excellent alongside salads, light pasta, grilled vegetables, and soft fresh cheeses. Its saline, mineral character makes
